Sulphur Springs, Texas – KSLR -Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
On one of our weekend getaways in our Mooney, we make a stop at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
I must say this on one of my most favorite of stops for so many reasons. I will give you a hint, an FBO that makes you feel like you just flew home after a long trip away, the kindest people, wine slushees, and the best gluten-free French toast I have ever eaten.
We review every airport we travel in and out of. We also will let you know what we are flying, single, twin, or turboprop. We think it is relevant because the service you receive and the fees can vary based on the general aviation airplane.
Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
We choose our destination in a very scientific method. The airport is in the sphere of where we need to stop for the night. Plus, the name reminds me of a movie I watched a million times with my children and one of my foster daughters.
You know the movie I’m talking about: Disney’s Cars with Lightning McQueen and Doc, the Hudson Hornet. So we stop in Sulphur Springs, Texas (yes I know it is not on Route 66) and my pilot just grins at me as to why I chose this airport.

There is plenty of parking and will be more when the construction is finished. We actually had the whole ramp to ourselves.

There is a rack with every size chock sitting on the ramp.
Tie downs/Ropes
There is one tie down area which is free of debris. There are ropes, that are in good shape, on the ramp for your use.
Service at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
Friendly
I cannot express how friendly the people are at the Sulphur Springs Municipal airport. We were running behind courtesy of a headwind. We called from a fuel stop and they offered to stay open to wait on us.
The staff made us feel like we just landed home after a long trip away. We are not from Sulphur Springs and we have never visited before, but we certainty will have to come back.
Helpful
After being greeted with a smile and asking what they can do to help, the assistance just kept coming. The basics of restrooms, water, and snacks are the first line of offerings, followed by a crew car.
We are given the names of the hotels and an offer to call for us. I have already booked a room online, so they suggest their favorite hotel for our next trip. We have already been invited back and we have not been on the ground ten minutes.
We are given several options for dinner and given a run down of what are the favorites on the menu. We decide on the Redneck Bar and Grill for dinner based on the recommendations, as my pilot loves a great steak and we are assured that my gluten allergy will be no problem for the kitchen. They were right.
The steak and chicken were amazing. The service was terrific, my allergy recognized, and the price was extremely reasonable.
Prompt
The FBO staff is on it. The FBO is about to close but no one rushes us. Our fuel order for tomorrow morning is lined up based on our departure time.
No one helped outside but the inside crew is phenomenal and does it all with a smile.
Fuel at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
Full Service or Self Service
Full Service is available. The self-service pumps are under construction. However, when they finish, they will be brand new.
Ease of access
The fuel truck is brought directly to you and in our case was driven by a woman. I love seeing women in aviation. The self-serve will be very easy to access but a bit of a walk to the FBO when complete.
Card reader/Payment processing
The inside service was quick and easy. The self-service pump will have brand new equipment.
Condition of pumps
The truck was new, shiny, and clean. Did I mention it was driven and operated by a woman? Aviation is male-dominated so seeing a woman on the fuel truck is fabulous.
Lighting
I did not notice any lights on the ramp. It looks like the self-serve pump will have lighting when complete.
Facilities at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
Clean
The FBO is clean, well cared for, and a newer facility.
Accessible
The entrance to the FBO is obvious and just a few steps from where we parked. We were arriving right at closing time, courtesy of a headwind, and they offered to wait for us. We arrive right at closing time but we are treated like it is the beginning of their shift.
WiFi
The WiFi is fast and free.
Comfort
The lobby is a den with comfy furniture and a cozy plush couch. It looks like a place to take an afternoon nap, especially if the fireplace is lit. If you are staying for while, they have a grill on the porch and board games in the den.

There is a dedicated room for flight planning.

There is no Uber or Lyft.
Food at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
Restaurant/Delivery options
There is a restaurant, The Red Barn Cafe, literally right across the street from the airport, so walking is an easy option. There is also catering available from a local restaurant if you call ahead.
The best option is to take a crew care and drive seven minutes into the beautiful picturesque downtown where there are so many options for food, including a frozen wine slushy, fabulous steaks, as well as gluten-free desserts, bread and French toast.
Vending Machines
There are no vending machines but there are snacks.
Free Snacks
The popcorn machine was off, as it was closing time. They also have other snacks available like granola bars.
Ice
Yes, they have ice.
Coffee
There is a Keurig in the concession area with numerous flavors of coffee and powdered creamer.
Water
There are cold bottles of water available. However, the eco-friendly option, is the filtered water refill station. I carry around my own refillable water bottle, so this is a huge positive for me.

The restrooms are neat and well maintained. Nothing stands out about them, which is probably a good thing.
Spacious
The restrooms are of average size and you are not cramped.
Stocked
So both restrooms are stocked with whatever you could need.
Showers
There are no showers.
Smell
There is a faint smell of cleaning products; not unpleasant at all and lets me know the bathroom has been cleaned recently.
Fees at Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport
Ramp
There were no charges for use of the ramp or for the overnight stay. We did purchase full fuel for our Mooney.
Hangar
There are no overnight hangar options available. The have a good many hangars but they are for individuals, not for transient guests.
Fuel
The fuel is very reasonable. It is not the cheapest but it certainly was not the most expensive. We took thirty gallons.
Additional/Surprise fees
There were no additional fees. However, the surprise is how wonderful the municipal airport and the town of Sulphur Springs are.
Other Services
Maintenance
There is no maintenance shop on the field. However, there are a few mechanics that are on the field and can come in a pinch.
Pilot Store
There is not a true store, but a glass case with some logbooks and merchandise. The airport sells its own line of coffee by the bag.
Other
This airport is gem in the middle of Texas. Sulphur Spring Municipal Airport has automated weather.
Anything really cool
This airport is home to Legend Aircraft. We have been offered a tour should we return. I am adding this to the list of reasons we have to come back to Sulphur Springs, Texas.
If Sulphur Springs is anywhere in your flight path, stop in. Take a crew car into town if you have time to enjoy local restaurants, locally grown wine or a wine slushee at Phinesse Farms, amazing regular and gluten-free desserts at Baked + Brewed, and super friendly people.
Did I mention that this town has see through bathrooms? Yep – see through. You can sit on the potty and see everyone else in the park, but they cannot see you.
